Building a Display on a Contact Lens

Babak A. Parviz
Associate Professor
Department of Electrical Engineering
University of Washington

Abstract: The presentation briefly explores the possibilities offered by converting a conventional contact lens to a multi-functional miniature system. A number of applications may be imagined for such a system ranging from immersive augmented reality to interfaces with mobile devices.

The group at the University of Washington has taken steps to explore the design and construction of functional contact lens systems. It has been able to produce a set a micro-components (silicon circuits, photodetectors, LEDs, etc) and has developed methods to incorporate them onto unconventional substrates such as glass and plastic. It has used this technology to build the first generation of functional contact lenses.

Speaker Biography: Babak Parviz is an associate professor of Electrical Engineering and the Associate Director of the Micro-scale Life Sciences Center at the University of Washington. His areas of research include
