Interactive Whiteboards and Multi-Touch Tables:
A SMART Perspective

Abstract: SMART Technologies ULC is a world leader in the development of interactive whiteboards and multitouch tables. With more than 20 years of experience in the touch display industry, SMART has a unique perspective on developing successful interactive products. In this presentation, three speakers from SMART will discuss some of the challenges and learnings gained from developing and deploying these products. The presentation will focus on SMART’s technology and experience in the area of interactive products with a strong emphasis on the multitouch SMART Table. The just
announced latest generation of the SMART Table hardware and software suite will be shown at the presentation. The SMART Table will be available after the presentation for attendee’s that wish to try it out. The speakers and agenda for the presentation are as follows:

David Martin: Introduction and an overview of interactive displays at SMART. (15 mins)

Gerald Morrison: A historical perspective of the hardware development of interactive multitouch Tables at SMART. (15 mins)

Ed Tse: Overview and Demonstration of applications and SDK for the SMART Table. (30 mins)

Biography: David Martin is the Executive Chairman and co-founder of Smart Technologies Inc., and is responsible for establishing and communicating the strategic direction of the company as well as creating and maintaining corporate alliances and partnerships. David is a recognized worldwide expert in distance collaboration and is the author of a number of articles and papers on the subject of working and learning at a distance. David has served as a member of the Expert Panel on Canada's Role on International
Science and Technology, part of the Prime Minister's Advisory Council on Science and Technology. He is a former member of the Leaders' Forum on Innovation organized by the Conference Board of Canada and of the Board of Management of the Alberta Economic Development Authority. 

David has a BSc in applied mathematics, and is a founding member of the Calgary Council of Advanced Technologies (CCAT). He is also a member of the Society of Information Displays. He is the named inventor on a number of US patents and patent applications pending in the US and around the world. David received the 2004 Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance (CATAAlliance) Award for Private Sector and Leadership in Advanced Technology. Along with Smart co-founder; Nancy Knowlton, he also received the TeleSpan Pace Award in 2006 which honours teleconferencing
professionals who make more than a decade of contributions to the industry; and the 2005 Alberta Centennial Medal, awarded the province’s Minister of Innovation and Science.

Dr. Gerald Morrison is an Electrical Engineer who has worked for SMART Technologies ULC for more than 14 years. During that time he has held many roles in development, research and management. All of his roles have related to the development of new interactive touch technologies and products. He is the original developer at SMART for DViT™, a machine vision system for multi-touch display interaction and he was instrumental in the early hardware development of the SMART Table. He is currently
the External Research Manager and is actively working with individuals and
organizations developing interactive and collaborative technologies. Dr. Morrison has published several papers in conferences and journal publications and is listed as inventor or co-inventor on several patents and patent applications.

Dr. Edward Tse’s interests in computer supported face-to-face collaboration began in 2002 with his explorations into multi-mice systems. This quickly moved into the area of multi-touch at SMART Technologies in 2003, and expanded to voice and gesture interactions in his PhD. Dr. Tse worked with the tabletop and speech experts at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories and has publications at numerous academic conferences (ACM CHI, UIST, CSCW) and has seen his research published by popular
media (Engadget, PC Gamer, BBC, CNN, Associated Press). He served as the publicity chair for the 2009 Tabletops and Interactive Surfaces conferences, and will chair a workshop on Educational technology at the ACM CHI 2010 conference.

Dr. Edward Tse joined SMART Technologies in 2008 and developed multitouch software for learner-centric education which helped to create a new product category for SMART, the SMART Table, which continues to lead in both innovation and market share. Dr. Tse guided the multi-touch revolution within SMART’s product line as the Multi-touch Software Architect, and is listed as inventor or co-inventor on several patents and patent applications.
