Webcasting

Through generous support from Apple Computer and Gang Xu we are webcasting our lectures. Via the webcast you will be able to see the speaker, their slides, the audience and hear the lecture.

You will be able to ask questions of the speaker through IM (instant messaging). We are delighted to try to make these lectures more accessible to BASID members through this method and welcome all feedback on how to make the lectures even more accessible to all of you.

This webcast utilizes Cast:stream 2.5 (required) software that allows for video, presentations slides and online chat all at the same time (Cable modem or DSL speed or better required for this webcast).

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Cable modem or DSL. 56K modem users will not be able to receive the broadcast.

JOINING THE WEBCAST: Be prepared. Take a few moments now to download the cast:stream 2.0 software (instructions are below). Then log on to the broadcast within 15 minutes of the program start.

SETUP INSTRUCTIONS:
If you have problems with this setup process, contact Gang Xu
<gxu@apple.com> well ahead of the scheduled date of the webcast.   Setup questions cannot be handled the day of the Webcast.

1. Go to the following web page, to review the minimum system requirements and to download the cast:stream 2.5 Player.  http://wchttp.apple.com/castinfo/

2. Follow each step in this process to ensure a successful connection.

3. Select the Download section and download the appropriate player to your desktop. It will unstuff automatically and place a folder on your desktop called "cast:stream Player" (Windows users will have to unstuff it manually).

4. Complete the "Connection Speed" and "Streaming Test" sections to
confirm that your configuration is correct. If necessary use the troubleshooting area to make sure you are able to receive the webcast.

5. Launch the player application in the cast:stream folder. Once you "Agree" to the user license, but before logging on, select "Preferences" from the cast:stream Player menu in Mac OS X (or the Edit menu for Mac OS 9 or Windows) and enter the following address into the cast:stream server address field:   wc1.apple.com

7. Download this .csd file to your computer -- Right mouse click on the link, and select "Save Target As", choose the place where you want to save the file (e.g. Desktop).

8.  Fifteen minutes or so before the broadcast (6pm, 10/21), double click on the .csd file.  This should start up castinfo and connect you to the broadcast.

Please Note: This will all only work if Quicktime and castinfo have been installed properly. Please go through this procedure carefully, including the Connection Speed setup and Streaming test,  before the broadcast. Also note that when I ran the streaming test for the first  time, Qucktime spent about two minutes "Configuring" itself, so be patient.
